Part 1: Photo essayPart 2: My Internship ProjectMy internship project has basically consisted of myself creating projects and activities for the children to complete. I will include some photos of the final products I had the kids create in the slideshow below. To complete my project, I had to come up with an idea for an activity, create a sample, show it to my mentor, and then provide the children with interactions on how to create the product themselves. Part 1:
How did you make a meaningful contribution to your workplace?
Part 2: What new appreciations did you develop while working as an intern? Why?
I have had to ask for help numerous times when being constructed by the teachers to do something. Not help on how to complete the task they asked me to complete, but for help understanding what they asked me to do. I've noticed that since the teachers at my internship have been working at the preschool for 15-25 years, they tell me to do things that they don't tell me clearly what they actually want me to do. I think they expect me to know what they mean because they have been doing the work for so long; whereas I have only been working in this field for a week and a half.
Are you following the advice in "How to be an intern everyone remembers"? If so, how is it working out? If not, what are you going to start doing? The project I will be taking part during my internship experience is to create lessons/activities for the children to complete in both the 5 year old class and the 3 year old class I am teaching in. The children are so young that they don't really recieve traditional lessons, so I will be creating and prepping activites for them to complete and I will teach along with the activites. So far, I have begun prepping an activity for the 5 year olds to complete this coming Friday the 27th. The activity relates to the letter of the week (just like all the activities in the class always relate to the letter of the week) which is the letter "Y". The children will recieve a paper with "Yummy" and "Yucky" written on the top of the page. They will recieve a food flyer filled with a variety of foods. Foods that taste good and bad and also foods that are good for you and bad for you. The point is for the children to think about which foods are "yummy" and "yucky" for their body, meaning which foods are actually good for your body and what is bad for your body. This incorporates motor skills, science, and math as well because I will also have to children count how many foods they chose in all. I have creativity from myself and from my mentor to help me come up with this idea, and I know the kids are going to find the activty very fun just based on how I have seen them enjoy activties from last week and today. I didn't need much support. I obtained the food flyers myself with guidance from my mentor because I didn't know exactly where to go to find them. Other than that, I didn't and dont need support from anyone.
I will be prepping some actvities revolving around fun things to do over summer to get the kids excited for the end of the school year. I will begin prepping this activity next week for the 5 year olds. For the 3 year olds, they really need to be taught basic things. So I will be coming up with a craft such as "Create Your Own Play-Doh" where the kids will do just that... With guidance from me and my other mentor of course. What is your job title?
- Preschool Teacher What are your main duties and responsibilities? - Providing a safe and educational place for children inside and outside of the classroom. What skills and training are necessary for your position? - It is required to recieve a masters degree in childhood development. Internships within the field of child care, child education, and any education is very helpful. How did you acquire these skills? Through school? On the job? - School, obviously. You need a college degree. You aquire skills by completing hands-on work with children to gain experience for this field of work. Do you consider a career in this area satisfying? In what ways? - The career I have now is one that I enjoy very much. Seeing the kids I teach have fun and learn, because of what I have provided them with, makes me feel very proud. What is a typical work day like? - Mainly keeping children in line and well baheaved. This can be very hard because of how disrespectful some children are. The day is spent prepping for future crafts, working with the children on crafts, and making sure they are learning correctly for them. Because every child is different of course. What is the purpose of this organization? - To bring education to children at a young age to prepare them for elementary school. How important is getting along with other people in your career? - It is important to make good impressions with parents because you want them to know that their child is in a safe, fun, and educational place while away from them. Internship Reflection For the internship journal, write about what strikes you. Here are prompts to get you going (you don't need to respond to all of them at once!): What questions do you have about your internship? - How should I go about dealing with disrespectful children in the classroom? What connections can you make between this internship and what you've done in school? - In Spanish, I had to create a childrens book and spend time with second graders reading it to them and reading other stories to them. I have to read stories to the 5 and 3 year olds at my internship. Has anything happened that's worth telling us about? Funny stories? - There are quite a few stories to tell and it has only been 3 days at my internship so far. I'll start off talking about the amount of time the boys in my 5 year old class spent making Minion noises. They made Minion noises all day long. I almost went crazy here them say ba-na-na over and over again like a minion all day. I asked one boy in that class what he wanted to be when he grew up and he told me he wanted to be an Ewok. The boys in this class also love to have burping contests which has gotten pretty annoying because they had three contests today and they just could not stop cracking up. They found it hilarious. The girls are much easier to handle than the boys. The girls ask to sit on my lap, ask me to push them on the swings, play with them, paint with them, pretty much everything they do they want to do with me. One girl told me I was her best friend today which was so adorable. The boys aren't affectionate like the girls are, but in the 3 year old class, on my first day with them (which was yesterday), one boy became completely attached to me and wouldn't let go of my hand all day. He gave me a leaf as a present and then he kissed me on the cheek! The kids are just so adorable. I'm really enjoying my internship so far. What have you learned about your organization's mission and purpose? - I have learned that the organization is devoted to providing a well thought out and interesting learning experience for children ages 3 to 5. The 5 year olds spend their time preparing for kindergarten for the upcoming year. What new skills are you developing (or will you need to develop) for this internship? - I am developing the skill of listening to all the childrens stories which go on and on because they just have so much to say. How are you getting to and from internship? What's it like to be commuting? - To get to my internship, I am just driving myself to and from the preschool. It is pretty close to my house and it is my old preschool as well, so I am familar with the drive because I go to a lot of places around the area of the preschool. What strikes me most about my workplace is that it is a very kid-friendly place. There are toys everywhere. There are crafts that children made hanging all over the place, even outside! My colleagues are all very friendly and seem very excited to have someone new working with them. They are all very helpful and try to get me familiar with my new surroundings. What strikes me most about the job I am doing is how crazy the kids are and how hard it can be to keep them focused. The kids are a wild bunch and they don't seem to like sitting still. I am excited about creating fun activites for the children in my class to complete and have fun with! I am worried about how crazy the kids will continue to be and how hard it will be to make them pay attention and listen.
I am interning at San Dieguito United Methodist Preschool. My two mentors are Anne Buchanan and Debbie Neville. I will be a teachers assistant in two classrooms for 3 year old children and 5 year old children. Anne Buchanan teaches the 3 year old children and Debbie Neville teaches 5 year old children. I will come up a lesson plan as well for both classes. I will be interning in the 3 year old class on Tuesdays and Thursdays, and I will be interning in the 5 year old class on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays. I am very excited to learn about how children act and how they are taught. I look forward to receiving a first hand look at how to teach a young child's brain to prepare them for world ahead of them. I am nervous about the children not listening to the me and the teacher and I am concerned that they will be hard to handle as a teacher.
